Facebook have made the decision to change the rules for fans of Facebook pages.
Businesses will no longer be able to utilise a ‘Fan gate’ – you
know, when you have to ‘like’ a page first to enter a Facebook
competition or access content.
This rule change comes into effect on November 5, 2014.
Facebook have said that this step has been taken:
‘To ensure quality connections and help businesses reach the people who matter to them, we want people to like Pages because they want to connect and hear from the business, not because of artificial incentives. We believe this update will benefit people and advertisers alike.’
What does this mean for businesses?
- Check in at a place or enter a promotion through your Facebook page.
- Your likers are more likely to be genuine fans of your brand so this is a good thing. This should always have been your goal with the old adage, ‘quality not quantity’
Even though the rule doesn’t change for a couple of months, start now (or continue) working on your quality quantities!
Keep your content interesting, relevant, and shareable.

Oh and check the fine print…
You’ll start seeing some competition organisers sneaking an eligibility clause; i.e.: only a liker is eligible to win. We strongly recommend NOT doing this. It would be a real turn off and could damage your brand. Take your risks with some quirky content instead!
